Medical Weight Loss

Weight Loss Is Not Only a Cosmetic Concern

Around 70% of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity is a serious health issue, linked to major causes of death, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

What is Medical Weight Loss?

Medical Weight Loss is a treatment designed to support healthy, sustainable weight loss. This approach involves a weekly injection of a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist, such as Semaglutide, which influences the brain’s regulation of insulin, appetite, and food intake. It also slows down the rate at which food leaves the stomach, promoting a feeling of fullness and reducing appetite.

How Does It Work for Weight Loss?

GLP-1, such as Semaglutide, plays an essential role in digestion and appetite control. This incretin hormone, released by the small intestine after meals, helps lower blood sugar by prompting insulin release. The GLP-1 agonist slows gastric emptying, keeping you feeling fuller longer, ultimately reducing appetite and aiding in weight loss.

How is It Administered?

The injection is administered once a week, ideally on the same day each week. It can be taken with or without food and is injected subcutaneously in the abdomen. We start with the lowest effective dose and may adjust it every 2-3 weeks to help you achieve weight loss of about 1-2 pounds per week. You’ll likely notice a decrease in appetite, cravings, and portion sizes over time. Most side effects are related to the gastrointestinal (GI) system, including nausea, constipation, and vomiting, which may increase with higher doses. If you experience severe nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

Contraindications

This treatment is not recommended for those with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MENS 2), or type 1 diabetes.
